How we pick

We curate from credentialed professionals and creators. When we have tested something ourselves, the guide says so.

Where the advice comes from

Every guide starts with people who know the subject for a living. We look for:

  • Credentialed professionals: certified financial planners, physicians and nurses, registered dietitians, licensed therapists, electricians and plumbers, HR professionals.
  • Official and nonprofit sources: government agencies, consumer-protection bodies, public-health organizations and established nonprofits.
  • Creators with a track record: educators, authors and video creators whose advice holds up and who show their work.

Each guide names the experts it draws on and links to them, and lists its sources at the end. When the experts agree, we say so plainly. When they disagree, we show both sides and explain why.

What we do, and what we leave to professionals

  • We research, compare and summarize. Most guides are curation, not first-hand testing.
  • We have not personally tested every product we mention. If we have used something ourselves, the guide says so.
  • We do not invent statistics, reviews or testimonials.
  • We update guides when the advice or the products change, and show the date at the top.
  • We are not a substitute for a doctor, lawyer, accountant or financial adviser who knows your situation.

How products get picked

A product makes a guide when the experts we cite recommend it, or recommend that type of product and this one is a well-reviewed, easy-to-find example. We favor good value and products that are easy to buy. We say why each one is there in a sentence or two.

Affiliate disclosure

Adulting Hacks is reader-supported. Some product links are affiliate links: if you click one and buy something, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We mark sponsored picks.

Commissions never decide what goes in a guide. A product we would recommend without a commission is the only kind that gets in. Product links are marked as sponsored for search engines, and any placement a brand paid for carries a visible Sponsored label on its card.

Later we may show display ads. Ads will be labeled and kept apart from the editorial text.
